Jeffrey and Linda Singer, owners of Singer’s Jewelers, were among the many deeply effected by this tragedy. Liza and her mother, Martha, were customers and friends of the Singers, and Liza’s untimely death came as a shock to the Singers and their staff.
But the impact was even more personal for Linda Singer having lost her best friend just three years prior who was murdered by her eighteen-years-old son in her own home. As time passed after Liza’s death, Linda became increasingly inspired to do something to commemorate Liza’s passing and to honor the victims of domestic abuse.
Linda decided to create a pin, which would represent Liza’s voice and that of other kindred spirits who have lost their lives to domestic violence. The pin would become of symbol of hope to survivors of abuse everywhere, giving a voice to this growing epidemic in our society. After talking to Liza’s mom, Singer’s Jewelers took the idea one step further and reached out to local high school students to design the pin.
Working with their art teachers, the students were asked to create a design that represented domestic abuse. The criteria provided to the students was purposely vague in order to allow them to utilize their own creativity and develop a design that was their own. In addition, the schools were provided with statistics about domestic abuse, and were encouraged to open a dialogue with the students about the dangers of this epidemic.
Singer’s Jewelers received numerous designs from local high
school students. The depth of feeling and the level of understanding in the
designs that were submitted by the students overwhelmed the entire Singer’s
Jewelers staff. A panel of judges, including Liza Warner’s mother, several close
friends and community members, overwhelmingly selected the winner as “Loves Me,
Loves Me Not” (above), drawn by Mohonason High School junior Kelly Pane. The
simple yet poignant design evokes emotion in all who see it.
When the original design was unveiled to the Capital Region, there was an overwhelming response. There has been continued dialogue about the pin and what it represents to those who find themselves in a dangerous situation. Singer's Jewelers is proud to have undertaken such an initiative, and it is our ultimate goal to share the pin with the nation and, eventually, the world.
